The good folks of the Bike to Bestival peleton, led by Buskers on Bikes, will be making their way from Lambeth Palace in London on Tuesday 4th September to be with us on the Isle of Wight on Thursday 6th September. They’ve all been training hard for the ride and are ready and raring to go in their finest neon lycra shorts.

The riders will pedal away on their trusty steeds via parts of the London 2012 Olympic cycling road race route and through the beautiful English countryside to Southampton, before hopping on a Red Funnel ferry for the final push to the big party.

They’ll be performing a few musical numbers along the way, and opening our Big Top on the Thursday, as they raise as much money as possible for Cancer Research UK. It’s a great cause – and here’s where you can help out…

Find out more about the route and everything Bike to Bestival at: biketobestival.blogspot.co.uk and also on Facebook.

And if they’re passing near you, please do come out and give them a cheer; you might just see one or two wild creatures on two wheels, as the bikers take fancy dress cycling to the streets…

We’d also like to thank VELECO for supplying their kit and for their kind support. VELECO have a passion for Fair Trade and eco-friendly products and their aim is to offer cyclists an ethical and eco alternative for guilt free riding.

Because they’re just bloomin’ good people, they’ve also given us a competition where you can win a set of ethical cyclewear including a jacket made from recycled plastic and an organic t-shirt, cycle cap and hoodie.

To enter, all you need to do is ‘like’ them at facebook.com/Veleco.

Swim2Bestival is a charity event that takes place the day before the festival begins and allows festival-goers crazy enough to take on the challenge the opportunity to don their Speedos in a ‘man (or woman!)-against-the-elements’ test of strength and stamina, swimming the 1.3 mile stretch of cold and choppy water that is the Solent, and it’s all for charity.

NB: only a limited number of people can swim each year, and they are already full up for 2012

In 2012 the swim will be going from Hurst Castle to Colwell Bay on Thursday 6th September and they will have one main charity, the Island Youth Water Activity Centre, which all the swimmers will support.

The swimmers also have the opportunity to raise money for a charity of their own choice and you can read about these and their motivations for swimming on the profiles section of the Swim2Bestival website.

You can also find (& like) them on Facebook.

Now in its 6th year Swim2Bestival, has raised over £10,000 for charity and allowed over 45 swimmers to cross one of the busiest shipping lanes in Europe to reach quite possibly the best festival in the world.

The Island Youth Water Activity Centre has provided support for the swim since it began in 2007. IYWAC also runs activities and courses for the benefit of all young people on the Isle of Wight. Their prime aim is to provide a variety of water based experiences, which combine challenge, safety and enjoyment whilst also training young people and instructors to a national standard.

  • Bestival adds even more acts to our 2012 line-up

“Well, we’re nearly there folks. Three weeks to go and already Robin Hill and Combley Farm are buzzing with diggers, lorries, fence builders, set makers and arty type people wandering about with pencils waving at imaginary structures. I’m very, very excited. In other news we have some amazing latest and, quite possibly last, additions to the line-up. Zane Lowe and Beardyman have both grown up with Bestival having played nearly every one and most of the stages. I’m honoured to have them both back. JJ Doom is one of the most exciting collaborations in recent years for hip-hop, the amazing Valerie June is gonna knock your socks off and King Charles has been one of my ones to watch for a few years now. Finally he’s coming to Bestival! Hope you are too… The last tickets are about to go!”
    Rob da Bank

We’re properly chuffed that Beardyman, one of our bestest Bestival friends, will be returning to the main stage this year to dazzle and delight one and all with his mind-blowing vocal trickery. Gallantly coming on board in the wake of Frank Ocean’s unfortunate cancellation, Beardyman is one of the most exciting live acts to have ever graced our stages, so make sure you catch him. And, just to build up the excitement a bit more, check out his 2011 Bestival appearance here.

We’re very proud to announce that RizLab is working with JJ DOOM at Bestival for RizLab Project 4. JJ DOOM (Jneiro Jarel and DOOM) will deliver a world first debut performance of new material on Friday night at the RizLab stage. In the RizLab tradition they will be delivering their own musical experiment with an intimate hi-tech festival first that will see everyone in the crowd ‘DOOM-ED’. Full details of the JJ DOOM RizLab project will be announced shortly but, until then, enjoy an exclusive first play of Rhymin’ Slang from the forthcoming JJ DOOM album Key To The Kuffs here.

And there will be more live love and shenanigans from coiffured dandy King Charles, boundary smasher Random Impulse, who has been known to leave his audiences amazed and ecstatic, psychedelic groove purveyors The Time & Space Machine and we’ll be blessed with the organic moonshine roots music and magnetic Tennessee charm of Valerie June (pictured below).

      Valerie June

Chap hop extraordinaire will come from the one and only Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer, there will be classic acid house reinterpreted in an acoustic style from the Balearic Folk Orchestra, Brooklyn boy/girl electro pop from MS MR and 5-piece shoe-groove behemoth Daytona Lights will be bringing their unique modern twist to 80’s melody. And we will also have appearances from Bruno Charles, Isaac Danquah, The Golden Strands and Southern Big Man.

One of the things we’re especially excited about this year is that Platform One, an independent, not-for-profits youth arts organisation specialising in arts initiatives and training opportunities for young people on the Isle of Wight, will be joining us for a bit of a knees up. Not only that but they’re bringing some of the finest examples of the bands that have benefitted from their programmes, including Signals, The Bear Attack Club, In Motion, Stu Collins, The Sessions and Diminished.

      Zane Lowe

We’ve been trying to get him to come back all year and, after juggling his diary just for us, we’re as pleased as punch that one of our favourite DJs, Zane Lowe, is able to make it to Bestival 2012 to play on the opening day to vibe up the crowd like only he can!

But that’s not all, as we have lots more top kiddies joining our rather splendid array of selectors including Rinse’s hip hop and off beat king Alexander Nut, mind-expanding beat shamans Psychemagik, rave breaks don Slipmatt and indie colossus Propaganda feat DJ Dan. And there are plenty more dudes on a dancefloor smashing mission including Dick & Dom (Rip It Up) DJ Set, Johnno’s Bugged Out Mix, Across The Tracks, Bad Zuke, Tom Headfunk, Paddy Freeform, Pete Callard, The Dudes, The March Hare and The Playground Syndicate.

For those in search of a cerebral hit in our party paradise can look no further than the brilliant RSA who will present a very special event on the Amphitheatre Stage with the legendary Ruby Wax, who is…Out of Her Mind.

A very long time ago it wouldn’t have been wise to admit to being a witch. Or later; a woman with a sexual appetite. Not so very long ago, you couldn’t say you were gay. Then you couldn’t talk about suffering from the big ‘C’ word. Mental illness is the last, most pernicious taboo, and it is high time it went the way of the others. One of Britain’s best-loved comedians, writers, and mental health campaigners blasts into Bestival to open up and shake us out of this last, lingering taboo. So grab a coffee and join Ruby and the RSA for a chance to listen, learn, debate and discuss. Flex your mind muscle and get enlightened!

    • Howard_marks_homepage_main_960x350_03

      Howard Marks

Finally, it wouldn’t really be Bestival without him, so we’re buzzing that Howard Marks will be heading across the Solent once again to join us for the party. One of the UK’s best loved raconteurs, just being in Howard’s presence is a joy and we are very lucky indeed!

We’re down to the last remaining tickets so make sure you grab one before they’re gone!

And don’t forget there’s going to be lots of online action in the next few weeks, so for all the latest news, ticket competitions and lots more make sure you keep checking this website and our Facebook and Twitter pages.

    • Big-dig-lg

We are very pleased to announce that WaterAid is heading down to Bestival this year as an official charity partner. They will be setting up on site and spreading the word about their brilliant Big Dig appeal which is helping thousands of people in Malawi gain access to safe water and sanitation.

‘We’re thrilled to be have WaterAid as part of the festival, it makes perfect sense to join up with the charity as getting the water and sanitation facilities right at a festival are absolutely paramount, and this is what WaterAid is all about. I really hope that people get behind WaterAid’s Big Dig campaign as it will make a huge difference to some of the world’s poorest people.’ Rob da Bank

WaterAid will have a stand in between the Grassy Hill and Wishing Tree field, where people will be able to have a cup of tea, relax, try on the famous tap and toilet costumes and get involved with WaterAid’s campaign.

‘Bestival is a fantastic event and we’re excited to be part of it,’ said WaterAid’s Anna McGuire, Senior Events Fundraising Officer, ‘we will be getting into the spirit of the festival whilst spreading the word of our vital work. People only need to donate a little bit of money to make a big difference as every donation we receive will be match-funded by the Department for International Development. It really is a great opportunity to make a huge difference to people’s lives. Roll on Bestival!’

Brand new for this year’s Bestival is our new premium camping area, nestled amongst a beautiful wooded area we’re calling The Wild Copse. Included in The Wild Copse area will be posh toilets and showers (which will really come into their own when you want to refresh yourself in the morning having danced your socks off at Bollywood) as well as a great food and seating area and a lovely chill-out bar serving until late.

It will be located close to our new healing area, The Soul Park, the new expanded and jaw-droppingly-amazing Arcadia Field featuring the Mechanical Cabaret and the pyjama party at the Slumbarave.
